The Carlos Slim Foundation’s inspiring commitment to biodiversity

The future of sustainable development is deeply linked to our ability to coexist with and protect the natural environment. At Unidos en Red, we want to share the progress made on ecosystem and species restoration and conservation projects, spearheaded by the Carlos Slim Foundation in collaboration with the Inbursa Foundation and various local communities.

Among the most significant efforts is the restoration of coral reefs in the Caribbean. Partner scientists have developed laboratory techniques that enable the cultivation of corals capable of withstanding rising sea temperatures and critical diseases such as “white syndrome.” Alongside this marine conservation effort, the foundation is leading a crucial initiative on land: the protection of the jaguar’s habitat and the comprehensive restoration of the Islas Marias Archipelago, where biologists and experts are actively working to eradicate invasive species so that native flora and fauna can reclaim their home.

The impact of these actions is not limited to wildlife; it also transforms people’s lives. Through sustainable management programs, such as the fishing sanctuaries in Yucatan and Baja California Sur, key species like octopus and lobster have recovered, directly benefiting the economy and the livelihoods of thousands of fishing families. Knowing that these initiatives prevent the emission of thousands of metric tons of CO2 into the atmosphere and restore balance to our seas fills us with immense pride and reaffirms our belief in the power of collaborative networks.
