At Unidos en Red, we recognize UNICEF’s response in Panama following the October 9 earthquake. The organization is working alongside authorities, humanitarian partners, and communities to address immediate needs and promote a sustainable recovery that places children and adolescents at the center of every decision.
Among the actions taken are the distribution of hygiene kits to displaced people, the establishment of child-friendly spaces, emergency education interventions, and the mobilization of supplies to strengthen health, water, and sanitation services in the most affected areas.
Assessments cited by UNICEF reported more than 600 affected educational facilities, including 35 that collapsed, as well as disruptions to drinking water, sanitation, and electricity. The organization estimated that nearly 8,300 children and adolescents had humanitarian needs and proposed mobilizing US$2.57 million to sustain its multisectoral response.
We are moved and encouraged to see a partner in our network taking an approach that integrates emergency response, protection, and recovery. Rebuilding after a disaster also means restoring schools, safe spaces, essential services, and the confidence families need to look to the future with hope once again.
