This paper provides the building blocks to help private sector players invest in initiatives that address social determinants of health concerns in their communities. Through analysis of pioneering
initiatives, the paper extrapolates key overarching guidelines and principles, as well as steps for design planning, implementation and monitoring.
The case studies demonstrate that while financial returns on such investments remain a determining factor, many players are moving towards adopting a shared-value approach and factoring financial, clinical and social benefits at the individual, community and systems levels. Considering the complex challenges related to the different determinants and the unpredictable timelines for achieving visible improvements in health outcomes, designing equity-centred programmes, analyzing data for impactful investments and collaboration between all essential stakeholders can accelerate the way towards a healthier and more equitable world.
